Posted March 12, 2018
Maple Ridge, BC: Paws for Hope Animal Foundation applauds the City of Surrey’s decision to ban the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits. The bylaw, which will come into effect June 2018 follows more than 200 cities across Canada and the U.S. prohibiting the sale of cats, dogs and rabbits in pet stores—including Vancouver, New Westminster, Delta and Richmond.
“We have been working very hard to have municipalities across the province prohibit pet sales in retail stores,” says Kathy Powelson, Paws for Hope’s executive director, “and we are so encouraged to see more cities in BC recognize that this inhumane business practice should end.”
Since 2011, Paws for Hope has been advocating to end the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits in pet stores—working directly with municipalities to have bylaws passed. In 2012, they successfully lobbied the City of New Westminster and in December of last year, the City of Vancouver was the next city to pass a motion to restrict pet sales. Ms. Powelson presented before Surrey City Council in August to request the ban. Victoria is currently considering a similar ban.
“The ban in Surrey is a victory for the community, a victory for the animal welfare community and most of all, a victory for all of the animals who suffer the most.”
