We are so excited about Cruelty Free BC. We are excited to have an opportunity to educate consumers on animal testing for cosmetics and household products, to bring to light how we can be mislead by cruelty free labeling, and to promote local companies that have proven that not only is it possible to make products with ingredients not tested on animals, but also, it is possible to make premium products.
Smell This! Aromatherapy raises the bar and provides a very persuasive argument as to why all companies can (and should) have the same high standards.
Tell us a little about your company…
Smell This! doesn’t believe that you need to go radioactive to have glowing, radiant skin. Looking great au naturel should be all natural. Our sweet-smelling, high quality products give you a little eco-friendly luxury in our busy world.
All products are made with natural, plant based ingredients and are free from parabens and other harmful chemicals. Every product is formulated by Arline Trividic, owner and Certified Aromatherapist, who uses pure essential therapeutic grade oils as well as pure and natural base oils.
Not only approved by PETA and Cruelty Free BC, Smell This! only deals with ethical, environmentally conscious growers and suppliers.
Smell This! has been in business since 2002, growing from a back yard workshop to a full sized, small batch manufacturing facility based in Richmond, BC. Now that’s grass roots!
What led Smell This! to the decision to create cruelty free products?
Smell This! Aromatherapy chose to be cruelty free because of our love for animals. We cannot stand to see them tortured needlessly for the profit of others. It didn’t make any sense to our company the need for testing natural products that are going to be used by humans on animals. Therefore, we did all our testing on friends and family!
How do you go about sourcing your cruelty free materials?
Over the past ten years, Smell This! Aromatherapy has searched for raw material suppliers that share the same values as our company. It was easy to find out whether our ingredients were being test on animals or not because our base ingredients are so raw and natural. For example, our lavender essential oil is supplied from a lavender farm. We did not want to be that company who purchases their ingredients with a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ philosophy. We want to be sure our products are cruelty free.
Those who test on animals often say there’s no other way or viable alternative. What would you say to that?
Again, our company is baffled why a company would test a product that is used for humans on animals. Those who test on animals are looking to make a quick profit and do not care about the well-being of animals or their consumers. They are not wanting to spend the time and resources to search for more humane alternatives.
There is also the common misconception that companies are required by law to perform animal tests for cosmetics or household products. This is not true. To market a product, a company must demonstrate its safety, but this can be done by using approved non-animal tests and combinations of existing ingredients that have already been established as safe for human use.
It has been estimated that there are over 10,000 ingredients already proven safe for use. At Smell This! we pride ourselves on using all those ingredients. If you can’t read the ingredient name, we shouldn’t be putting it on your body.
