Dear Peanut,

There were no plans for our family to bring in another pet. With a dog, a cat and a two year old we felt our family was pretty complete. That was until, however, we saw your photo posted on Facebook

When I met you, I knew I had to take you home. You came home with me that day, and there you have been for the last year and a half. Your story is a sad one, shuffled around for a good portion of your life and ultimately abandoned in an apartment at 16 years old. The shelter staff knew you before then as you were often picked up “running at large”, and they were eager to make sure you went to a home who would give you the retirement you deserved. And luckily that was our home.

For the past year and a half you have been a 4lb warrior. Even though you had no teeth or lower jaw, you loved to eat popcorn as much as I do. You licked the couch obsessively (it’s okay, we need a new one anyway). Occasionally you would attack people at the ankles. You acted like you were the top dog on the block (I know…I know..you were), and when you were not sleeping, you spent your time patrolling the couch making sure Cinnabar the cat did not come near. You would bury yourself under the covers and we would always have to check before sitting down.

And more than anything, you loved the heat. Whether it was the heat from the fireplace or the sun, you could spend hours basking in the heat.

And today we had to bid you farewell, so you could run free of your old failing body. Our hearts are shattered and there is a big empty place in our home. I sit here feeling so many different emotions. I feel angry. Angry that so much of your life was crappy. I feel grateful. Grateful that we were able to give you best last year and half of your life. But most of, I feel sad. Sad because you are gone. You touched so many people Peanut. You were the mightiest dog I have ever known. You were the most ridiculous old man. And you will never be forgotten.
