On May 7 & 8th the Victoria Humane Society, BC Humane Society and Paws for Hope Animal Foundation are co-sponsoring a weekend to support and bring the rescue community together.
May 7, 2016 “Resisting burnout doing animal justice work”
It is well understood animal rescue professionals are at great risk of suffering from compassion fatigue, but over the years we have come to witness what we believe is the impact of trauma on individuals involved in animal rescue and advocacy work.
Many of us are regularly exposed to the suffering of animals. Suffering, that is often caused by the hands of another person. We are frequently reminded that we are not able to save them all, and at times we feel like no one else cares. We feel our work is not valued and many of us cope by isolating ourselves further. We cannot continue on this way. This cannot be sustained.
We are excited to host this one day workshop with Vikki Reynolds to begin to move beyond trauma and isolation towards honouring our competence and wisdom and look at ways we can incorporate practices that will sustain us, while also identifying ways we can support one another.
Join us on Saturday, May 7 9am-430pm at Coquitlam Best Western where we will discuss:
· What’s at the heart of your work?
· Why do you do what you do?
· How we can honour your competence, experience and wisdom?
· Identify practices that can sustain us
· The difference between collective care vs individual care and how we can be together
· How we can achieve balance?
May 8, 2016 “Increase our Impact by coming together”
You are invited to a participatory gathering to explore how we, as grassroots organizations, can work together to achieve a greater impact in improving the lives of animals in BC. We are eager to explore ideas that will allow us to work together across our different approaches so that our work can be sustainable and effective over the long term.
We know working together will have its challenges. We have many differences between us. But we also have tremendous possibility if we are able to find shared work that can connect us, making us more influential as a whole. We could explore ways to work as a network to influence government policy and social norms. We could find ways to support and nourish each other in the work we are all so passionate about.
Our focus will be on what is possible to do together beyond our differences. What can we create together that is impossible to do alone?
We will come together to talk, plan and explore new ideas. Our format will be highly participatory so we ask you to come prepared to help listen, learn and create a new collaborative working environment together
Our format will be highly participatory, facilitated by Chris Corrigan, so we ask you to come prepared to help listen, learn and create together.
